Growing your Martial Arts School with the right MINDSET - NEWS 1 - NEWS 3

Most instructors I know are looking for more students but there are some that don’t want any more for a multitude of reasons. What I find interesting is there are some that feel they have reached a sealing whether it be mentally or by their premises not being able to fit any more students. Some instructors work out a method to move forward and others stagnate. Now here is a perspective that may help some of you, the average school in Australia has 75-80 students. We know this because we cover over 3000 schools with insurance and of course they have to submit the student numbers. With that average in mind, a school with say 250 students is a pretty good size isn't it? This is a common perspective for many instructors they believe this is their sealing whether they are restricted by the venue size or some other elements. Changing your mindset is the first place to start growing your school.

If you look at some of the successful gym chains their thinking is to have memberships in the thousands. Some years back in my building days I worked on a Fitness First Gym in Melbourne and it was built to hold 10,000 members and I know that before it opened it pre-sold over 2000 memberships. Here are three things they had in place that helped them succeed – They built a brand, they had great systems in place and they totally believed they would be successful. Yes I know they also had buckets of money thrown into the project but you don’t necessarily need that.

Are martial artist school owners thinking big enough? Do we already have a sealing in our mind before we even open our school! Should we be thinking differently, after all we have more to offer than a gym don’t we?

A colleague of mine told me he was helping out a friend who owned a gym in NSW by becoming their main sales person. He was there a couple of months and in his best week signed up over 230 people. Yes he is a great sales person but who in the martial arts industry has signed up over 200 people in a week, I don’t know anyone. There is no reason why a martial arts school could’t sign that many people up but do we believe it’s possible! There are certainly a lot of very successful martial arts school owners in Australia and some are happy to share their secrets with you.

Here are a couple of things these instructors have in common:
*They Built a brand
*They Created good systems
*They Believed in what they are doing
Sounds familiar!

Knowing what the elements are is one thing, having the elements in place and knowing how to use them is a whole different matter. Not your area of expertise, well find someone who can do it for you. Most martial arts instructors don’t have all the skills required to run a very successful school. The smart ones recognise this and either acquire the skills they need and or get people in that can do it for them by commissioning a business mentor to help them.
