QUALIFICATIONS

The questions from the other page are answered below:
I encourage all instructors to help maintain or increase their qualifications and professionalism by constantly up-skilling themselves. This new combined NCAS and IMA Certification, run through International College of Martial Arts (ICMA) gives all instructors the base level government / industry recognition ideal for part-time instructors at a minimal investment. For those looking to become a full-time teacher this course is a very good starting point. However one should also consider taking the next step by doing a full qualification (eg: Cert III / IV in Sports Coaching or Fitness). As an active Trainer and Assessor I love to facilitate these courses as often as I can. There are many great trainers out there and you will get exposure to them through IMCA. I look forward to meeting and working with you on this and other training courses around the country. Lets keep working together to help strengthen our industry through education and constant improvement.

Yours in martial arts,
Graham Slater
IMA Chairman

Credibility is essential in our industry, as martial art instructors need to be professional and qualified /certified in the eyes of the government, the corporate sector and to the general community. This is vital for the continued growth of our industry and of course the longevity of an instructors' school. The IMA has consulted with various industry bodies to be able to offer instructors a certification that will assist them in the sustainability of their school, (including obtaining cheaper insurance).

Would you like some assistance in chosing the right qualifications for your situation and to find out if you can obtain government funding?

What is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
A Recognised Training Organisation (RTO) is an accredited private training provider, that is registered under the Vocational Education and Training act of 1990. As an RTO we offer Nationally recognised training programs and successful participants are awarded Nationally Recognised Qualifications under the NQF (National Qualifications Framework).

These qualification programs are for those who have a genuine interest in their chosen industry, who want to begin a career or expand on their current knowledge base by achieving the required qualifications for that industry.

Which qualification is best for me?
You should choose the qualification program that is appropriate for your needs, professional goals, knowledge base and experience. Please read the certification description to assist you in your decision.

What is RPL?
RPL recognises the skills you have gained from other courses, life experience, work experience and training provided at work. The RPL process measures your skills against the outcomes of a course or module.

RPL includes course/module exemptions. RPL does not include Credit Transfer.

It is important to apply for RPL if you think you have already got some experience that might be relevant to your course.

The advantages of RPL are:
You can work out whether your experience and/or training is similar to that required by the course/module for which you have enrolled. (Note: results can only be entered after enrolment.)

If you have already achieved some of the outcomes you might not have to do some of those again thereby saving time and effort.

It means that you only have to do modules which are new and challenging.

It recognises that you are commencing with many skills—that you are not a total beginner.

How long does it take to complete a qualification?
Completion time for courses may vary significantly from individual to individual, especially with flexible learning. Once a student can demonstrate competence according to the qualification requirements, they may be signed off for that particular unit or qualification. On average a certificate level qualification usually takes between 6 – 12 months of study via a flexible learning process but there are a number of FAST TRACK Programs that will get you through much quicker.

What is Competency Based Learning?
Nationally recognised qualifications or statements of attainment are able to be issued once competence has been demonstrated. This may be determined via, course study, RPL or on the job assessment via a nationally recognised trainer and assessor, qualified in or working in collaboration with a person already qualified in the certification being sought. Simply ask yourself, can I do the job required for the qualification being sought?

How am I assessed?
All participants are assessed via a combination of successful completion of workbook assignments, assessment of skills learned at RTO's workshops, seminars and courses, completion of assessment exams held at workshops, seminars and courses completion of a personal portfolio outlining evidence of competence including RPL.

Who trains and assesses me?
All training and assessments are conducted by qualified trainers and assessors (having completed the minimum BSZ40198 Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training) that have qualifications and in depth experience in the qualifications being assessed.

What happens if I do not pass an assessment?
If you fail to achieve competence in a particular assessment, you will be given opportunity to complete that particular unit or element at a date to be agreed upon by yourself and the assessor.
